*Wizard Of Oz (1939)

The four main cast following the Yellow Brick Road
Director:
Victor Fleming and Richard Thorpe
Writer:
L. Frank Baum
Starring:
Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley

Dorothy, a girl living on a Kansas farm dreams of a life where her beloved dog Toto is safe from torment by her wicked neighbour. She plans to run away but during a forceful tornado, she is struck on the head and wakes up in a mystical land. Here she is greeted by many fantasy characters, looking remarkably similar to people from her former Kansas life. Dorothy travels down the yellow Brick Road to the merry old land Land of Oz where she longs to return home. Along the way she meets a cowardly lion, tin man without a heart and a scarecrow without a brain. The four characters travel to the Emerald City to meet the keeper who has the power to give them their hearts' desires. Their journey is fraught with danger but after defeating the Wicked Witch of the West, Dorothy and her friends arrive at the Emerald City where their dreams are fulfilled.

Although the film did not break any box office records when it was first released, over time the Wizard of Oz has become a cult clasic with many loyal followers. It's kitsch and camp status has been sealed in history with the release of many sequals, interpretations of the characters and more, but none have proved to have the endurance of the original.
