The film that made John Travolta a household name, Saturday Night Fever was a look at the life of king of the dance floor, Tony Manero (John Travolta).
Tony is an uneducated Brooklyn teenager who works at a hardware store during the day, but at night he becomes king of the dancefloor. The highlight of his week is going to the local disco, where he struts his stuff! It is here that Tony meets Stephanie. Stephanie is another great dancer, and she agrees to dance with Tony in a local disco competition. Tony hopes romance will blossom but it is not to be as Stephanie is moving to Manhattan. As Tony aspires to greater things and becomes disillusioned with the life he is leading, Stephanie and Tony decide to help each other to start their lifes again.

The Bee Gees wrote much of the music for the film, providing a disco beat to get everyone's toes tapping. Travolta of course moved on to greater things including Grease and more recently, Pulp Fiction and other contemporary classics. It was, however, Saturday Night Fever that launched his career and without Travolta the film would undoubtedly not have been as successful. Despite the dark side of the film, Saturday Night Fever has many endeering qualities making it a kitsch musical experience and one that has stood the test of time.
