After initial reservations about whether the film would even make it to production, director Randal Kleisner eventually made the film version of musical Grease and became one of the most popular musicals ever.
Set in 1959, at Rydell High, a wholesome portrayal of an all-American squeaky clean high school, Grease stars Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), a couple who have a brief holiday romance but are torn apart as Sandy travels back to her native Australia.
However, fate brings the young lovers back together as Sandy moves to America and is transferred to the same high school as super cool leader of the T-Birds Danny. Danny is too cool to be seen with cheerleader Sandy and as a result the couple go their separate ways. Both try and make the other jealous by various means and with the intervention of the Pink Ladies, Sandy eventually wins Danny back to her arms.
With a fabulously baudy and singalong sound track, Grease is filled with subtle sexual inuendo and some wonderfully elaborate dance scenes, including the National Bandstand, Teen Angel and of course, the beautifully choreographed final scene.
This is truly a feelgood kitsch movie and has stood the test of time, even today being voted the greatest musical to grace the silver screen.
