A Guide To Kitsch: Part 2
A History Of Kitsch
In Search of Kitsch...
So how did the desire to collect kitsch arise? Why are people drawn to its charms? Where does World of Kitsch fit in to the bigger picture?
The word Kitsch first appeared in the German dictionary over 100 years ago. It became an accepted English word in the early twentieth century and has since been used to describe objects of poor taste or usually poor quality.
World of Kitsch is the result of several years of collaboration between a group of kitsch collectors across the globe.
World of Kitsch was borne in 1998 as a small ten page site hosted on Tripod, dedicated to a collection of kitsch objects and celebrities admired by the team.
The site soon grew and by 1999 was nearly 100 pages in size with a small but dedicated fan base. After several redevelopments to the design and much additional content, it became clear that the time had come to move to bigger premises. Worldofkitsch.com was purchased in 2001 and visitor numbers have since soared as more and more kitsch content appeared online.
The site has gone from strength to strength, winning awards and featuring in countless national and international publications, fuelled in no short measure by recent sixties, seventies and eighties revivals. Combined with the advent of shops selling gloriously kitsch objects such as the gadget shop, World of Kitsch has discovered a winning combination! As for the future only time will tell...
In part 3 of the guide you have the opportunity to develop your kistch skills and test your knowledge in the kitsch challenge.
